Burma 101

An old website of mine, circa 2001, will be back online in several hours. It’s so old, in fact, that the whole site was handcoded in Notepad, and each page uploaded individually. Before blogger, typepad, wordpress….. Strangely though, almost 10 years later, most of the information on the country itself is current. As described by many, Burma is a country where time stands still.

Ven. Thutivara, Sagaing

The site was created back in 2000 at a time when there was little information to be found on Burma, unless one knew whom to ask or had the patience to dig deep into archived journals, news sources, or had connection. Nor was there current information to be found, despite over 1,000 imprisoned dissidents and political (prisoners) which included students and members of the opposition party, The National League for Democracy (NLD). The majority had been kidnapped, or taken from their homes for involvement with the group. Many have also ‘disappeared’. While this sounds dramatic, I know for a fact that it is absolutely true. For nearly 20 years since monks and students took to the streets and were shut down, little has changed in Burma as the people suffered quietly in poverty and fear while the leaders of the country, the generals continued to live like kings.Today’s protests, also led by monks in across Burma, were initially fueled by an arbitrary 100% increase in the cost of fuel. After living under such harsh conditions, the people again took to the streets, emboldened by the involvement of the leaders of the people, Buddhist monks.

Find more current information in the New York Times, Washington Post, Reuters. For background information, BBC is a particularly good source. Check the links on the right hand side bar.

Please be patient as I make some updates to the site and migrate it into moder times.

Here, there, everywhere.

It’s been a very, very busy month or so around here, topped by a now mobile baby, whom I found laying on his stomach, eating my flip flop, on one such busy day. Job offer(s)! Travels! Jetlag! Baby jetlag! More vacation planning for when our apartment is being painted! Finding childcare for when I begin work next week! The list goes on, without mention of everything that comes in between, but the stories will wait.

I couldn’t wait to share this link, though, which was shared with me by a friend. I feel that it’s an important topic, and the hypocrisy on the subject of women’s breasts absolutely needs to be hashed over, and over again because some of the people who adore them in the sexual context, are the same who abhor them when they’re used to nourish babies. Show them a little cleavage in a deep v-neck on the street and they’ll risk neck injury for a peep. Show them some cleavage with a baby attached to it, and they’ll SMS their friends about that disgusting woman, with the tits hanging all over the place, who should’ve been feeding her baby sitting on a toilet in a public bathroom. Others suggest ignorantly that women should plan ahead and pack a bottle. Now, why would I pack a bottle when I ‘ve got jugs ready to go?

Okay…mine aren’t JUGS, but they work.  I’ve never personally encountered issues, but hearing of other women who do fires me up.  So…. visit the link and scroll through all the photos.
