Best of East and West

….. may Allah keep you in safe hands and bring up a lovely citizen of this world, Max …… …… . The best of East, West and Far West,” a friend wrote.

I love how those words feel and sound, these blessings from a friend, who lives far away, that my very special baby will grow into a young man who will be guided by loved ones of his varied communities, far and near. They cross oceans and transcend language, culture and sensibilities to embrace him securely in a blanket of love that knows no distance. He truly is made of the best of the East, West and Far West.

I tighten my arms around him as he drifts from a dream that evokes a heartmelting lobsided, lip curling grin to a nightmare that makes him shriek aloud. My instinct is to protect him from everything and anyone that could potentially hurt him in any way and his cries paralyze my heart. I know, though, that to shield him from the world is worst thing that I could do for my little boy. Perpetually covered in longyi, gifted to me on a very special trip to the Karen territory in Burma by members of tribe who have been at war for nearly 60 years, I cast a little wish that he will always feel the the outpouring of love that escorts him throughout life, providing a sanctuary that nurtures inner peace and the courage to take on the world. To face the many battles that will inevitably come his way throughout life. I wish for my boy the courage to follow his heart, regardless of the obstacles that he will encounter along the path.

Many have awaited his arrival, a first great-grandchild, a first grandchild, a first son, a first nephew and a first love both tender and fierce; the most genuine that I’ve ever known.
